What Can a Song Do to You? Lyrics

Music from an open window
Music sudden, fleeting
Music from an open window
Music sudden, fleeting
Music from an open window
Music sudden, and fleetingOrdinary music in an ordinary street
Why does your heart start beating
What can a song do to you?
Can it wake any memory sleeping
Can it call back a day when your heart fled away into somebody else's keepingWhat can a song do to you?
Can it bring back a spring in December
Can it make with each note such an ache in your throat
And you find you can still rememberFor the past is a house full of treasure
The lies buried deep in the store
Every smile, every tear, every pleasure
And a song is the key to the doorMusic from an open window
Music sudden, fleeting
Music from an open window

Music sudden, fleeting
What can a song do to youCan it kindle a flame that was dying
Til it burns once again with its joy, with its pain
And your heart's of a sudden crying
Oh I know, yes I know, now I see
What a song has done to me
As we were walking down the streetThere came from a high up window six notes of music
Then her feet as though the road were suddenly steep
And heavy with the summers heat
Cam slower and very slow
Stop and tell me why you weepTurn this way and look at me
Does it remind you of a time when you were sad
Oh no, but it reminds me of a time when I could be
It reminds me of a time when I could be

Mary Lloyd (1916–1993), also known as Molly, was the mother of Nick Drake. In 1934, she met Rodney Drake, and they were married in 1937. Molly gave birth to Nick in 1948. She was an accomplished poet and songwriter. Her poetry is somewhat maudlin but beautiful. Her compositions for piano are marked by the same looping style that characterized her son Nick's guitar work. Her daughter Gabrielle asserts that her mother's work is unquestionably a strong influence on Nick's work.
