What's So Lyrics

Hole in the road
Sun on your back
Shoulder the load
Your ancestors passed
Wear on your sleeve
The virtues you lackBut don't get above your raisingSell your damn soul
Or get right with the man
Keep treading water as long as you can
But whatever you do
You must understandThat you don't get above your raising
No you don't get above your raisingCuz it's one for the somber
And two for the stone
And three for the ready to get low low low low
Four for the fortunate few that don't knowThe difference between what should be
And what's soReach for the sky
Kneel down and pray
Get in the dirt and
Get out of the way

But don't you forget
'til you climb in that grave
That you don't get above your raisingOne for the somber
Two for the stone
Three for the ready to get low low low low
Four for the fortunate few that don't knowThe difference between what should be
And what's soOne for the somber
Two for the stone
Three for the ready to get low low low low
Four for the fortunate
Few that don't knowThe difference between what should be
And what's so

From deep in inland Alabama comes a talent so effortless and sincere that it is a wonder why the big wigs didn't jump on him sooner. John Paul White, who has recently signed with mega-label Capitol Records, relies mostly on his acoustic guitar to build his songs - but has no problems dressing them up with melodic electric guitar lines. I know I'm always pulling the dramatics out of my hat, but these songs really are achingly beautiful.
