When Christmas Hurts You This Way Lyrics

When your friends gather their families
And their families are quite sane
When your wife or husband left you
Standing in a frozen rain
There's no one to buy a present for
You couldn't afford it anyway
No turkey in the oven
No cookies on a tray
Oh, you really do think about Jesus
When Christmas hurts you this way
When the last one you remember
was the last one you deserved
You look back at all the mistakes you made
Then somehow made much worse
The refrigerator's humming
There's no wreath upon the door
Just a room in disarray

Oh, you really do think about Jesus
When Christmas hurts you this way
This apartment is getting colder every day
I'd burn some Christmas cards
but all I get in the mail
is more bills to pay
Yeah, it's hard to sort it out
Hard to sort it out
Yeah, it's so hard to sort it all out
When Christmas hurts you this way

Formed in 1993, Scott McCaughey designed The Minus 5 as a pop collective, with each record the group put out featuring a new lineup. Throughout these releases, he worked the most frequently with R.E.M.'s Peter Buck, who was featured on the group's eponymous debut EP, which was only released through They Might Be Giants' mail-order record club, Hello CD of the Month Club in 1994. Their full-length debut album Old Liquidator was released in 1995, and the Minus 5's lineup consisted of McCaughey, Buck, and Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow of The Posies.
