When We Tried Lyrics

You can smother me with kisses and feel free
To let your tender arms surround me
You can love me without fear but don't come here
And try to build no dreams around meA man's a fool who looks for love
For one time in a lifetime he might find it
So don't waste no time a talking about how love can hurt
'Cause I don't need remindedI'll take my happiness a little at a time
Just anywhere I find it
Try to feel at home just knowing that
Should you decide to leave I wouldn't mind itAnd when you're gone I'll not recall a love
That only lived one night and died
Just a mem'ry of what little happiness
We found together when we triedI can almost read your mind
And what I find's not hard for me to understand
'Cause a woman's love is stronger one
Remembers even longer than a manAnd if I should even feel that you're pretending
That I'm her I wouldn't mind it
If there's any happiness left

In a lonely world like this let's try to find itI'll take my happiness a little at a time
Just anywhere I find it
Try to feel at home just knowing that
Should you decide to leave I wouldn't mind itAnd when you're gone I'll not recall a love
That only lived one night and died
Just a mem'ry of what little happiness
We found together when we tried

Jan Howard has seen her share of ups and downs personally and professionally and has managed to come out on top. Married at age 15, Jan had three sons before she turned 21. After two divorces, she headed to Los Angeles and took on jobs as a waitress and a secretary to support her family. Through singer Wynn Stewart she met and later married up-and-coming songwriter Harlan Howard. Although she had no musical training or experience, Harlan convinced her to record demos of his songs, which brought her the attention and encouragement of Johnny Bond and Tex Ritter.
