You Haven't Earned It Lyrics

You crave attention
As if it's due to you
You want permission
To behave as badly as you doYou want respect, but
You don't act respectable
You want fame to fill the void
Where you once had a soulBut you haven't earned it
You haven't walked long enough in these shoes
You don't deserve it
You haven't nearly paid your duesIt's so pathetic
This image you portray
Shatters like crystal
And slowly fades awayYou want the world's eyes
You need the accolades
You want the money
And all the empty praiseBut you haven't earned it
You haven't walked long enough in these shoes
You don't deserve it

You haven't nearly paid your duesWhen it's all over
What will you have left?
You'll still be incomplete
Forgotten and depressedYou want acceptance
It's all you wanted all along
You want forgiveness
From those who you have wrongedBut you haven't earned it
You haven't walked long enough in these shoes
You don't deserve it
You haven't nearly paid your dues

"Assemblage 23" is a one-man futurepop/ebm project, whose sole member is musician Tom Shear, based in Seattle, Washington, USA. Prior to starting Assemblage 23, Shear experimented with music under the name "Man on a Stage", beginning in the early 1980s. Most of Shear's music at this point was instrumental, as he lacked the confidence to sing; the quality of the music itself was highly questionable by his own admission. Shear eventually began to add vocals to his music; at the same time, Shear was also playing bass in a punk band called the "Advocates".
