Highway 17 Blues Band
Highway 17 Blues Band is the low country’s definitive “power blues” band, mixing fresh, original compositions with smoking hot interpretations of vintage and modern blues and rock classics. Based in the Charleston area since summer 2009, seasoned veteran musicians bring over a century of combined experience to the stage. The Highway 17 Blues Band musical experience is a journey through the heart of American blues scenes, from Chicago to Memphis to the Mississippi Delta. They tip their hat to the original blues pioneers, celebrate the british blues rock artists of the sixties, and cap it with a modernism that boils with excitement. Like the east coast highway that runs straight through the heart of South Carolina’s low country, the band’s style encompasses a retrospective journey along a well-travelled familiar road, but still reliable and relevant today. Gary Wright’s overdriven barrelhouse harmonica playing fuels the fire and is the perfect complement to band leader and chief songwriter Jack Downey’s smoldering guitar work. The rhythm section features the ever-steady beats of drummer Greg Levkus and the rock solid low end brought by bass player Jojo Wall. Recurring highlights in the band’s set include rollicking renditions of classic songs “Baby Please Don’t Go,” “Somebody Loan Me A Dime,” and “Howling For My Baby.” Original compositions “Whiskey Blues” and “Butterscotch Blonde” are houserocking favorites as well. From Albert King to ZZ Top, Highway 17 Blues Band is the real deal.
