The group Raices Incas was formed in 1977 and consists of four musicians, all dedicated to the task of exploring the origins of Andean music. Their name alone indicates with what scholarly care they apply themselves to their research: "races" means "roots" and Inca is the name given to the ancient race who once inhabited the Andes. The leader of the group is Jorge Rodriguez and his fellow musicians are Hernan Pagola, Alfredo Lucero and Daniel Navarro. They all use traditional instruments of the kind used by the South-American Indios who still live in parts of Ecuador.
