"Love and strength tie us together" -Andrew Dual 2 unofficial slogan
Andrew Dual 2 is a duo from New England, known for their innovative use of percussion. They are also notorious for their genre-hopping and their employment of non-instrument instruments.
After a long period of focusing solely on live performances, the group’s first EP, "Andrew Dual 2 I", was released in early 2008, and received airplay on local radio stations. "I" became popular for its remarkably fresh sound.
On May 15th 2008, "Andrew Dual 2 II" was recorded in under 4 hours by the full ensemble of Andrews and a session guitarist. "II" became an instant classic, with many listeners impressed by how quickly it was recorded.
A remix album, "I+II=Remixes", was announced, but after a few months it was believed to have been shelved until on August 6th 2008 when it was finally released as "Andrew Dual 2 III". "III" was consistently considered the best album of Andrew Dual 2, containing different and better versions of old songs.
Only a day after the release of "III", Andrew Dual 2 regrouped to have another session. After only 2.5 hours, "Andrew Dual 2 IV" was finished and ready for release, though technical problems caused it to be delayed. The songs featured on "IV" features the Ambient and daring percussion the band is known for while expanding into the genres of psychedelic and doo-wop.
After the release of "IV", the band went silent, with no word on any possible further releases. Andrew Dual 2 was apparently on complete haitius with no musical activity. However, on May 15 2009, the band found itself together again by chance and decided to record another EP on the spot. Despite being away from their instruments for months and being completely out of practice, "Mouse in My Cannoli" was released to massive critical acclaim, though it has yet to be as popular with the fans. In this newest release, the band experimented with post-punk and indie surf rock while proving they are still masters of their classic percussive ambient sound with the ambient masterpiece "Northern Migration." After the release, it was announced that the band's session guitarist had replaced one of the Andrews as he had been far more active in the recordings and the creative process.
Unexpectedly, the firing of the Andrew would only end up increasing his involvement with the group. He joined Andrew Dual 2 partway through the sessions of of the epic double-EP "Logistical Panini", along with two other in-demand studio musicians. This larger version of Andrew Dual 2 is sometimes referred to as Andrew Dual 2 & The Andrew Dual 2 Band. "Logistical Panini" was the groups biggest success yet, riding on the popularity of singles "The First Song" and "What I Want (When I Want It)".
In the wake of the success of their double-EP, Andrew Dual 2 decided to once again call upon the talents of the Andrew Dual 2 band for their next album, "Presents". Most of the album is a return to their roots, getting away from the more radio-friendly sound of "Logistical Panini". However, one track that really stands out is "Featuring", where Andrew Dual 2 fully embraces hip hop for the first time. The sessions ended with turmoil during the recording of the controversial "Move On (Phrase By The Window Shade)", but fortunately the band was able to patch up their differences and the album was released as scheduled.
Andrew Dual 2 went on tour with the Andrew Dual 2 band later that day, and one show was documented in the concert film/live EP "Cape Cod Remains To Blame". The video version is elusive (as is it technically nonexistent), but the EP version shows great insight into the power of their live shows.
The band went back into studio without the help of the Andrew Dual 2 Band to begin work on their next record. With just the core duo, they continued where "Presents" left off and moved into deeper into avant-garde territory. The work, titled "Wind Through The Trout Floor", is their most cohesive (as well as their darkest) EP to date.
Where "Wind Through The Trout Floor" ends, a different story begins. After 2009, the band became less cohesive and nerves ran strong. At least two of the Andrews were rumored to have left the band, and amazingly the session guitarist was able to get the two Andrews together using the advanced Polar Cola method of cutting-edge psychiatry. The band returned to form with the stellar debut of "Codec," the bands summer 2010 release. Though some regard "What a D is" as a personal attack on one of the Andrews, the band has never officially talked about the album; with AD2 Band member Brendan M. saying: "They won't talk about it. It frustrates me that they can't work their differences out, even after this album... don't know if they'll make it through another oen(sic)."
This atmosphere of perceived distrust between both the Andrews was to end with the release of the one Andrew wonder "CCD Lessions." Though only featuring one Andrew, the album, whose darker tone is more in the line of "Wind Through The Trout Floor," has been hailed as the bands most innovative work in years. The missing Andrew's voice is sampled on the track "All I Have." "All I Have" went straight to the top of the Saudi top 80, where it would stay for almost two days. The whereabouts and even existence of the other Andrew are subject to much debate on many music websites, with Pitchfork.com saying: "Andrew, come back. We don't know where you are but we know where you belong!"
...
After a long haitus, during which the future of Andrew Dual 2 was speculated on websites near and far, Summer 2014 saw the return of both Andrews on June's "Meatballs" single. Though a single and not the EPs or LPs that Andrew Dual 2 is known for, Meatballs was hailed by critics such as Prim Retzel as "A dark exploration of what hides inside of all of us" and the Associated Press labeled the song: "Fascinating." With the overwhelming positive press generated from "Meatballs" release, are we to see a new dawn for Andrew Dual 2, or has the sun finally set on one of the greatest and most innovative bands to come out of the late oughts?
"Many critics have commented on the remarkable, even unheralded success of Andrew Dual 2, with renowned music critic Felix Basedow calling the Single "The First Song" "A Remarkable piece of music, on par with the works of Beethoven and The Beach Boys, while remaining fixed in the current music scene." But music critics have not been the only ones to comment on the success of Andrew Dual 2, with musicians from bands all over the music spectrum praising the album. Neil Young called Cape Cod Remains to Blame "Stunning....absolutely a work of art," and Arcade Fire frontman Winn Butler calling the success of the band "Heart stopping and recklessly enjoyable," and culminating with the music god Kanye West calling Logistical Paninni "A true work of art in our time. I have listened to this EP more than my own works, more than my own voice, more than even my television. What Andrew Dual 2 has accomplished in this short time period cannot be measured with words." Though praises such of these are commonplace in Andrew Dual 2's world, the band remains very modest. The success, it seems, has not gone to their heads, and they continue to make remarkable music because of it. "
