D-Train is both a nickname and group name. Vocalist / producer James Williams earned his nickname while a defensive tackle as a high school football player in Brooklyn. Williams began singing as a child and had extensive gospel experience. He met bassist / drummer Hubert Eaves, III, while attending school. They worked together with Eaves' father, a jazz musician, on You're the one for me, which was issued under the name of D-Train in 1981. The duo recorded for Prelude until 1985. Williams went solo in 1986, signing with Columbia.
