Hilken Mancini and Chris Colbourn
Hilken Mancini and Chris Colbourn is the debut, self-titled album from the collaboration of the above two artists. Hilken Mancini, of Fuzzy, and Chris Colbourn, of Buffalo Tom, obviously became acquainted with each other through the tight-knit Boston music community. Perhaps this project is the phoenix rising from the ashes of those two bands, or perhaps this is just one more step in a constantly evolving game of musical chairs amongst the musicians of Boston. Regardless, this collaboration seems to have been a success so far.
Hilken and Chris trade off singing lead vocals from song to song. Presumably, this trading off extends to songwriting as well, although all credits are listed jointly. The two artists have different musical styles, and yet they manage to blend them together quite well. You can hear the influences of their previous bands in the songs. Party Town echoes strongly with memories of Fuzzy, especially in the chorus, when Hilken lets loose vocally in accompaniment of suddenly louder guitar. It also uses the dual-voiced vocals that were a trademark of Fuzzy. The next song, Situations Count!, is far more reminiscent of a Buffalo Tom effort, with a gentle rock feel and plaintive male vocals. But despite these differences between some songs, there is also a commonality great enough to make the whole album sound cohesive.
