Guitarist Graham Gargiulo and singer Helene Dineen meet at a PJ Harvey gig while studying in London. Graham has previously achieved some success with The Charlottes, but Helene had to turn down a record deal with Alan McGee of Creation Records when she was only fifteen. They co-write songs and soon form Barefoot Contessa with mutual friends Dinesh Des Bhatt on bass and former Thrilled Skinny drummer Andy Kingston. The band's name is taken from the 1954 film starring Humphrey Bogart and Ava Gardner, a particular favourite of Helene's.
