Dark illie Villa
Sometime in the late 1980s, Dark illie Villa was welcomed into the world. As a child he was heavily influenced by the musical tastes of his brothers, with R&B and Hip Hop providing the soundtrack to his early childhood; in fact, one of his earliest memories was “Around the Way Girl” by LL Cool J playing as he was collected from pre-school. As the 90s progressed, he found himself listening to a lot of music from producers such as Trackmasters, the Neptunes, Timbaland and J Dilla.
His mother supported his musical ambitions, enrolling him in keyboard lessons from a young age and buying him a keyboard of his own. He later joined a local steel band which taught him about aspects of musical arrangement and the importance of a strong rhythm section.
As the millennium hit, he was introduced to turntables when his brother, with whom he shared a room, bought a set of Technics 1200s, although this marked a change of direction musically as he found himself being drawn towards UK Garage. Overall, he generally favoured tracks with complex bass lines or soulful melodies and vocals, and after a couple of years he was inspired to start making his own music, although at the time he was armed with little more than a demo of FruityLoops 3 and his own imagination.
When he went to college, he quickly enrolled in Music Technology which gave him the perfect opportunity to hone his production skills, and he would often stay behind after class on Fridays with friends to work on music, concentrating on using Reason and Logic for production while his friends would record their vocals. He would also begin to work with hardware outside of class, gaining his first experiences with the MPC 2000XL and the MPC 2500.
During his studies towards his degree, he would frequently run recording sessions for his friends and other local artists, working on the vocal production aspect. After a while, however, he decided to stop running the sessions so he could focus on his own music as well as his studies.
Over the years he gradually moved back towards his roots in Hip Hop and R&B, and is set to release his new EP “The illie Villa EP” in 2013.
