There are many forms of music that appeal to the members of Crowdis Bridge. Their influences run the full gambit (metal, jazz, Celtic, funk, house, indie-rock, bluegrass). Simply stated - Jason, Ben and Andrew love music. Their passion transcends any sort of genre boundaries. When they first decided to form a band, Jason was steeped in playing heavy and hard driving rock/metal rhythms on both bass and drums (the man’s pretty funky too); Ben had recently finished studying jazz at St. Francis Xavier University, while Andrew, with more of a blues background, was absorbed by various acoustic guitar finger picking styles.
Like most good things in life, the formation of Crowdis Bridge was rather serendipitous. Jason, who had his first taste of the stage playing with rock band Bemus Tun and later touring North America with Celt-rockers Mackeel, was interested in getting back in the saddle.
Ben played with a variety of bands in university; most notably alt-county group Red Barn and bluegrass influenced Dark Mountain. After graduating from St FX, Ben decided to spend some time traveling, playing and discovering around Europe. Following a brief stint in Scotland, Ben cut his trip short due to family matters and decided to move back to Cape Breton.
After playing a few solo shows in Nova Scotia, Andrew had recently discovered the excitement and joy of playing for others in a formal setting. He was also discovering his voice and just started coming into his own as a songwriter.
At the beginning of 2008, Jason, Andrew and Ben were invited to a private New Years party in Cape Breton. They each brought musical instruments with the hopes of an impromptu jam session. What happened next was both unexpected and welcome; the three inadvertently became the entertainment for the evening. After that night, the collective thought was “we might be on to something here.”
