John Peel Festive Fifty 1976

John Peel Festive Fifty 1976

Legendary Radio 1 DJ John Peel began compiling a "Festive 50" chart based on listener's submissions in 1976. He then played the fifty most popular tracks of the year during December.
The 1976 Festive 50 was dominated by what would now be called MOR and prog, with many long noodly instrumental solos from the likes of Yes, The Doors, Genesis, Led Zeppelin and even the Grateful Dead. The "musical wasteland" status of the pre-punk mid 70s is obvious in the number of tracks that were more than five years old in 1976.
