El Mahico were founded in 2002. The group was started as a modern tribute to buena vista social club, but since then has gone on to absorb many different styles and ideas from the world music scene while maintaining some distinctly British elements. The name is a play on "el magico" and they combine a variety of inspirations, from latin american guitar and percussive beats with seductive female vocals, hip-hop touches and DJ mixing. They drew enthusiastic responses at the Summer Sundae festival at Leicester in 2006 and were shortlisted for Channel 4's "Making Music".
