CAN!!CAN
"It's big. It's loud. It's Can!!Can."
Featuring guitarist/vocalist Mary Collins, drummer/vocalist Josh Lamar and vocalist/vocalist Patrick Aleph, Can!!Can's epic sound is electrifying.
It's not often that a heavy rock band from the deep South throws around dance-worthy singles referencing the Tower of Babel, lucid dreaming and "Gonzo" escapades through the Southwest. But then again, there has never been a band like Can!!Can before.
The group [as previously mentioned, Patrick Aleph of "PunkTorah" and rockabilly/punk band from Alive (Bomp) Records, The Love Drunks fame; Josh Lamar, just coming off a worldwide tour with Nick Oliveri's (Queens of the Stone Age) solo project, The Mondo Generators; and Mary Frances Collins, AKA Trixie Riptide of the riot grrl femme fetales, The Moto-Lita's as well as booking maven for Highland Ballroom in ATL] met each other through the Atlanta music scene in 2007. Both Mary and Patrick were looking to do something new musically. After toying with songs in Mary's kitchen, the duo secretly played shows in Atlanta, hoping to find a drummer. Along came Josh, who produced Can!!Can's first album and completed the lineup. The result was the local release of their first album titled "All Hell" and lengthy touring.
Move ahead to 2010... Can!!Can finds a home with the non-profit Jewish indie label, JDub Records, exalted for the rise to stardom of one of their most notable innovations, Matisyahu. Just a few short months later, Can!!Can's highly anticipated debut LP, "Monsters & Healers," is released to the masses, drawing from the worlds of alternative, dance, metal and punk. Mary's distorted guitar and bass combination fuels the fire with Mudhoney fuzz, while Josh's drumming asserts itself as the massive driving force that stokes the coals. Throughout, Patrick's broken yelps and howls are rough, yet pure against Josh and Mary's effervescent backing vocals that go from old-time radio coos to riot grrl gang chants. As "Heeb'n'Vegan" characterizes the artists behind CAN!!CAN: “Mary Collins' guitar is fierce yet intricate, Josh Lamar's drums are pounding yet not cacophonous, and Patrick Aleph's vocals are commanding.”
Can!!Can is a hard rocking band fascinated with spirituality and traditional texts in a decidedly nontraditional setting. Songs like “Giants” (You build an altar/You find a priest/Two tablets tell us what to do and say and feel and think) and “God Lives in NYC” (In the city of forbidden fruit/Child, you know you’ll touch the sky/HaShem brings a beautiful light/Bottled up when the city’s alive) illustrate Can!!Can’s complex understanding that mythology, spirituality and rock ‘n roll are inextricably tied together.
