Nametag was raised in Detroit, Michigan, where the hip-hop scene is vibrant and full of energy. It was through this environment that Nametag began to develop his skills. His name stands for having your own identity. This is his mark and it lets the people know who he is. The 'Tag part is from a metaphor from how grafitti artists tag their names when putting their artwork on display. He knew he was headed on the right road when he landed his first official studio recording alongside Black Milk on a track titled “Real Life” on a Slum Village compilation titled Dirty District Vol.
