Brian's Brown Noise
Brian's Brown Noise first recording The Wonder Years EP is a musical experiment in which chanting Indians, drum parades, flowing creeks, barking dogs, synthesizers, steam machines, and what can only be described as a "singing alien space slug" are blended together to create musicscapes ranging from electronic to psychedelic. Perhaps the best characterization of Brian's Brown Noise is as an abstract collage of associative noise-imagery and restless beats telling a story. This is music that you listen to while alone at night, in a dreamy state of relaxation between wakefulness and sleep. As the first chapter in the story of Brian and his Brown Noise the Wonder Years explores different mental states, experiments, and accidents representing work spanning from late 2009 into 2010.
The six songs here are affective and imaginative aural experiences. Brian runs the emotional gambit, from the celebratory jubilance and excitement of the opening track, "Two Sticks", to the strangulating fear of "Bark", to the meditative anti-anxiety of "Defervescence". Other songs are more emotionally ambiguous and invite you to imagine along with Brian and the cast of characters and places he has created. For instance, the closing track, "The City By the Lake", at one point conjures the image of an wide-mouthed alien slug singing baritone in a funhouse to a samba beat. That's just me, though. The fun is finding out what places your imagination will conjure from the musical microcosms Brian has created. Read more on Last.fm.
