Arthi Meera's vocal-centric, stripped-down sound is likely the result of a background in North Indian classical voice and a steady diet of Britpop and shoegaze since adolescence. After years of piano lessons and an unimpressive stint with the flute, she found a good friend in the acoustic guitar. Arthi performed regularly as a student in Claremont, California, playing solo shows and opening for touring bands on campus, including the Autumns and We Are Scientists. Upon graduating, she returned home to Chicago, hitting the open mic circuit and playing venues around the city (South Union Arts, Hot House, Silvies Lounge, Red Line Tap, Heartland Café) and performing at festivals such as Around the Coyote and Voices of Resistance. Combining her gentle pop tendencies with producer Ethan Stoller's experimental leanings, Arthi's self-titled debut reflects a selection of influences unique to her. The diamond-like clarity of her voice and her pointed lyrics are an exhilirating and disarming combination.
