Owenshire was born when Robert Muhlbock bought a bass guitar in 1992 and began recording dozens of bass and vocal demos under that name. In 1999 he moved to Waterloo, Ontario, and formed the band Echo Effect (later renamed Index) with his two younger cousins Greg and Dan, releasing two studio albums Percy Shelley's Heart (2000) and What Is Your Contribution? (2003) based mostly around songs the elder Muhlbock wrote as Owenshire.
