HODA MOHAJERANI

HODA MOHAJERANI

RAISED IN A FAMILY OF PREACHERS AND POETS, HODA MOHAJERANI IS A BRITISH IRANIAN SINGER-SONGWRITER WITH A STYLE AS DIVERSE AND UNIQUE AS HER HISTORY.

Her debut EP "Arrivals" introduces complex narratives of defiance and hope, crafted between continents and cultures. The knotty motifs in this music – death, metamorphosis, identity and the individual's search for Meaning - are defined by a style that is bold, distinctive. Channelling the spirit of 70’s Rock, charged with the audacity of Punk, and wielding the mighty force of the Pen, Hoda courageously re-defines the Protest song through her person. Exhibiting all the necessary qualities of a singer-songwriter whose charismatic presence commands notice, her untamed voice and infectious melodies smuggle Hoda’s controversial ideas over all our bigoted borders. “Mohajer”, after all, is the Farsi word for “immigrant”, “Hoda” for “enlightenment”.

In the throes of the Iranian revolution of 1979, Hoda and her family fled the country just before the government shut its airports. Her father, a man of cloth and a well-known orator and teacher, escaped from a Tehran jail and made his way on horseback through the Turkish mountains to meet his family in Europe. They lived in exile, in Paris at first, where a young Hoda would put on records and monster headphones to silence the constant boom of political banter in her home. Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Ricki Lee Jones, Joan Armatrading, Supertramp, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Neil Young, Tom Waits, Roger Waters, Patti Smith, The Clash, these were the artists that showed the young political immigrant how music transcends borders.

“They welcomed the displaced, the misfit, l'etranger. They welcomed me.” Hoda says. After travelling Iran in search of her spiritual roots and studying comparative religions at the University of London, this clairvoyant has carved a crystal ball in which she shows us the past, present and future, merging, dancing, distorting, and directing. Hoda’s story evolves as she has, carrying with it souvenirs, snapshots and scars from the rocky road of her roaming.

Hoda has performed in numerous venues throughout Europe and Britain, including Vienna’s prestigious Jazz venue, Reigen, the Kunsthalle, Ottakringer Soho Festival and Ost Klub. She has made guest appearances on BBC Radio and Radio Orange. She has collaborated with Gaudi on his fifth solo album “Bass, Sweat and Tears”, and her poetry has been published in an anthology of writings by Iranian women in the Diaspora as well as in several journals.

Hoda is currently working on her debut album and will be promoting her EP “Arrivals” throughout the UK, Europe and the U.S. in 2011 / 2012. Tour dates to be announced. Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
