The music for The Lord of the Rings film trilogy was composed, orchestrated and conducted by Howard Shore. The scoring requirements of the three films are complex: therefore each strongly features a technique called leitmotif, which is a musical phrase associated with a character, object, location, etc. The music for the three films was based heavily on the music of classical composer Richard Wagner, much of whose work was associated with mythology and fantasy.
