Cult Hero

Cult Hero

Cult Hero was a sideproject by members of The Cure in 1979, featuring (amongst others) local Crawley, England postman Frank Bell as lead-"singer" and Robert Smith's sisters Margaret and Janet (the latter of which would later on marry founding Cure guitarist Porl Thompson) on backing vocals. The band was created to see how well Smith and eventual Cure bassist Simon Gallup would collaborate and they disbanded sometime before the release of The Cure's second album "Seventeen Seconds" in 1980. They released a sole single with two disco-influenced new-wave songs: "I'm a Cult Hero" and "I Dig You", both of which are now available on the deluxe version of "Seventeen Seconds". Since they only had two songs of their own to perform on stage, they did cover versions of songs which were popular at the time back then. Bootlegs are available. Go look for them and you'll find them.

In 2004 they reunited and played a single "show" within an encore of an exclusive club performance by The Cure in London. 5 minutes later they disbanded again, inofficially.

The band consisted of:

* Frank Bell - vocals
* Robert Smith - guitar, backing vocals
* Porl Thompson - guitar
* Simon Gallup - bass
* Janet Smith - bass, keyboards
* Lol Tolhurst - drums
* Matthieu Hartley - keyboards
* Michael Dempsey - keyboards
* Margaret Smith - backing vocals
* The Obtainers - backing vocals
