Monkier
“Consistently adventurous hip-hop that pushes the outer limits of numerous styles.” -Paul DeMerritt, Creative Loafing ATL
Monkier is an Atlanta-based collective that concerns itself with making new sounds. The group combines hip-hop with elements of modern jazz to create something entirely new. Monkier consists of Zac Evans (vocals, sax, keyboard), Andrew Lastrapes (guitar), Robert Boone (drums), Brandon Boone (Bass), Umcolisi Terrell (Sax), Justin Powell (Trumpet), Will Hollifield (Sax), and Nick Dixon (Trombone).
By incorporating elements of modern jazz, hip-hop, funk, alternative rock, and avant-garde music, the group draws from a wide range of influences within popular music. Lyrically, the songs come from a personal place, with topics ranging from philosophical musings to hangovers. In writing original music, the band draws influences from artists such as Robert Glasper, Nirvana, Kneebody, A Tribe Called Quest, The Bad Plus, Jaga Jazzist, and Gorillaz.
Monkier released their eponymously titled debut album on April 18th, 2014. Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
