Drummer Jojo Mayer initiated Nerve in spring '98 as an experimental platform for a handful of New York musicians interested in the current stream of electronic music styles in DJ culture such as "drum and bass", nu skool breaks, nu-jazz, abstract funk, electro break beats etc., trying to detect and explore recent developments in "intelligent" electronic dance music. His basic idea was to reverse engineer the textures and rhythms of contemporary digital production within a live performed context.
