Tra i primissimi cantautori italiani, conobbe una grande popolarità a partire dal 1960 con successi come What a sky (o Su nel ciel) (1960), dal film di Francesco Maselli I delfini dello stesso anno, Il mondo di Suzie Wong (1961) versione italiana e cantata del tema dal film omonimo, Con te sulla spiaggia e Se mi perderai (1965), ma soprattutto con Legata a un granello di sabbia (1961) che fu il primo 45 giri a superare in Italia il milione di copie vendute, tutti incisi per l'etichetta RCA.
