I Am the Door
The band was formed in the summer of 2003 by Bristol University students Justin Percival (vocals) and Henry Bellairs (guitar) following personal tragedies involving the loss of close family members.Soon after, the line-up was completed by the addition of Justin's younger brother, Alex Percival, on drums and fellow Bristol University student, bassist George Laycock.
Music was to become integral to their expression of the human experience, be it grief or love or aspiration. There was, and remains, no set boundaries to their style. They never set out to sound like anyone in particular, though obviously draw on familiar and diverse influences ranging from Led Zeppelin to The Clash, with U2 somewhere in the middle.
Attempts at that terrible human affliction of pigeon-holing have led to I|AM|THE|DOOR being given various labels, most of which include the words punk and emo. However, on listening to their ever-expanding catalogue of musical delights, it is apparent that there is a lot more to this band than labels. Each member brings to the band a musical perspective of his own, and they combine to create a perfect fusion of the elements of punk, jazz, dance, metal, rock and pop.
The debut album 'Frequency' was released in October 2006. After picking up pace through constant touring of the country for the last 3 years, two members of the band decided to call it day. Leaving the Percival brothers; Justin and Alex with a lot of soul searching.
However, people have always known that optimism and perseverance are key ingredients in success. Hence the old saying: "If at first you don’t succeed; try and try again."
Justin met guitarist Will Slater in Febuary 2008, after seeing an advert he had posted on the ‘Bristolrocks’ website. Justin and Will arranged to meet for a jam, not quite knowing what to expect of each other. “I had been up all night at a party and was feeling rubbish! Justin came over and we started jamming and I just started feeling better!” The chemistry was there, and soon later, 'All We Have Are Ghosts' was born out of that first meeting.
Something was still missing though. Justin, Will and Alex advertised for a bass player, and after a few disastrous auditions we met James Williams. The line-up was completed.
I AM THE DOOR recorded a demo in June 2008 to showcase the direction they are heading with the new line up. “It is hard to believe we only started playing together in March 2008, I guess things move quick when you’re all pushing in the same direction.” What makes I AM THE DOOR special are the friendships formed and the passion for making music we love. “We all slept on a wooden floor at a mates flat in London, there were lots of partying and it was a chance to bond. But we were always on time for the studio playing our hearts out.”
I AM THE DOOR have been on a humble but steadfast mission to change the music in a positive way since 2004. They mounted their campaign the old-fashioned way – by loading up a van and taking it to every town that would have them. So look out for us coming to your town and give a big hello to:
