He was formerly a member of the neopsychedelic popgroup The Last James (1992-99). After collaborating with Lars Pedersen (WHEN) and Lars Lillo-Stenberg (De Lillos) in The Last James he has released cd´s under different names. A little confusing perhaps, but here they are in chronological order: Gramophones "The Last Dreamer" (1997), Haakon "Minstrel" (2001), Sir Haakon & The Popular Musicians "What is to come...?" (2004) and Haakon Ellingsen "Bounty" (2005).
While "The Last Dreamer" is a straight forward popalbum, "Minstrel" is a travelogue in the folk area with some touches of celtic inspiration. Haakon is here trying out his new bouzouki and new mandolin, and the result is an album with a lot of stringed instruments. With Kyrre Fritzner ( DE LILLOS, Jan Eggum, The Rambelins) as the producer, the album is trying to capture a feeling of ancient times and traditions, perhaps as it would have been like traveling around with a guitar being a minstrel? "What is to come...?" is a rather strange sort of conceptalbum inspired by ancient Britain. Or at least what a Norwegian, uneducated on the subject, imagine it to be... Also very melodic and very 1960´s... "Bounty" is a bit into the conceptual in the way that the sea and the far away shores are the common source, with the armchairsailor´s longing for the lost loved-one on some other continent.
