Anthony Sapp was born to a musician father so music was always in the house. As a child he took to the piano and was playing popular songs and classical pieces by ear. He played the drums and keyboards in various bands through jr high school and later became a bassist when a local band could not find one. In 1988, Anthony was fortunate enough to study jazz improv with the illustrious Sheldon Berg. (Shelly now heads the music program at USC) Shortly therafter, he moved to Los Angeles to attend the Bass Institute in Hollywood. (B.I.T.) There he was able to study with Jeff Berlin and Gary Willis; two men who have redefined modern electric bass playing. While in Hollywood, he played many studio sessions at A&M studios, including Herb Alpert's 1990 release "North On South Street". After returning to his roots in Houston in 1993, Anthony quickly became a noticable talent locally, winning the "Bassmaster's" contest in 1994. Recently he was nominated for the Houston Press 2001 Music Awards "best bassist". There have been local television appearances, with saxophonist David Caceres on ABC13(KTRK) and with guitarist Juan Manuel on PBS8(KUHT). He has performed for former Presidents Bill Clinton and George Bush senior at private functions. In 1999 Anthony played a tour of Japan with the University of Houston Jazz Ensemble. And again in 2001 played in Japan with the Houston fusion band Stratus. He now plays with 10 different bands a month. Everything from pop to be-bop, electric or acoustic basses, depending on what the gig calls for. Recently there have been local gigs with Crusaders piano legend Joe Sample, and the amazing keyboardist Bobby Lyle, whose resume reads like a who's who of the music industry. Anthony's reputation for playing any style with conviction and confidence will no doubt take him to places unfathomable. Read more on Last.fm.
