Black Velvet Band Lyrics

In a neat little town they call Boston
Apprenticed to trade I was bound
And many an hour's sweet happiness
I spent in that neat little town
Then bad misfortune befell me
That caused me to stray from the land
Far away from my friends and companions
To follow the black velvet band
Well, I was out strolling one evening
Not intending to stay very long
When I met with a pretty young damsel
Who was selling her trade in the bar.
When I watched, she took from a customer
And slipped it right into my hand
Then the Watch came and put me in prison
Bad luck to the black velvet band
Her eyes they shone like the diamonds
You'd think she was queen of the land

And her hair hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band
Before judge and jury next morning
Both of us did appear
A gentleman claimed his jury
And the case against us was clear
Now seven long years transportation
Right down to Van Dieman's land
Far away from my friends and companions
To follow the black velvet band
Her eyes they shone like the diamonds
You'd think she was queen of the land
And her hair hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band
So come all you jolly young fellows
I'd have you take warning by me
Whenever you're out on the liquor
Beware of the pretty colleen
Her eyes they shone like the diamonds
You'd think she was queen of the land
And her hair hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band
Her eyes they shone like the diamonds
You'd think she was queen of the land
And her hair hung over her shoulder
Tied up with a black velvet band

The Pittsburgh-based Bastard Bearded Irishmen fill the void of Irish rock n’ roll between Boston and LA. They are cutting their own path, inspired by bands like The Dubliners, The Pogues, Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly with an original, ferocious blend of rock, punk, acoustic and traditional, as well as contemporary Celtic.

Bastard Bearded Irishmen, or BBI, began playing bars and small venues and since October 2008, have expanded their resume to include citywide events such as Pittsburgh Irish Festival and Shamrockin’. Through great music, energetic performance, friendly attitudes and intricacies that only the Irishmen can provide, they have quickly become one of Pittsburgh’s favorite Celtic rock bands.

Their formula is simple: upbeat tunes about beer, whiskey, booze and pretty lasses. They’ll play classics like “Black Velvet Band” and “Whiskey in the Jar,” and rock you with originals like “Mutiny” and “Drinkem’, Drankem’, Drunkem’.”

Although they are the consummate musical professionals (Danny has a Master’s degree in classical guitar, Rachel is a classically trained violist), these guys also know how to have fun and definitely don’t take themselves too seriously. The music will be great, you’ll want to tap your toe or dance and they promise that you will be entertained and left begging for more!

Give ‘em a listen and see you at the next show. Sláinte!
