Guitarists John McLaughlin and Carlos Santana collaborated on the album Love Devotion Surrender, which was released in 1973.
The band on this album was made up of members of each of their bands (at that time Santana and The Mahavishnu Orchestra): Michael Shrieve, Billy Cobham, Doug Rauch, Armando Peraza, Jan Hammer, and Don Alias. In addition, organist Larry Young (under the name Khalid Yasin), who collaborated with McLaughlin in the Tony Williams Lifetime band, was a crucial member of the band.

Both Santana and McLaughlin were disciples of the guru Sri Chinmoy. The album was created as a tribute to jazz pioneer John Coltrane; it also features two songs by McLaughlin, but none by Santana. In 2003, Love Devotion Surrender was released as CD with alternative versions as bonus tracks. Bootlegs of the band's tour from 1973 and outtakes from the Love Devotion Surrender recording sessions circulate on the internet. In addition, in 2001 Bill Laswell remixed some of the material from these sessions, as well as material from Santana's collaboration with Alice Coltrane, and released it as the album Divine Light.
