'The legendary first release on Austria's pioneering Mego label, 'Fridge Tracks' is easily one of the most sought after releases on this excellent label. Few knew it back then, but the abrasive take on electronic music, the irreverent sense of humour - it would all become the foundations for something huge and very important. Recently Pita (Peter Rehberg, now the sole proprietor of the Mego, or Emego empire) has become more prominent thanks to his work with Sunn O)))'s Steven O'Malley as part of KTL, but back when 'Fridge Tracks' came out he was simply a British ex-pat DJing in Austria with a keen interest in Sahko records and the odder side of post-industrial music. At some point he collided with Ramon Bauer and Andi Pieper (aka General Magic) and not only did they decide to start the Mego label together but they opted to plonk a microphone in some fridges and make a record out of it. So far so esoteric, but who knew that the humble fridge could sound so, well, pumpin'. It would be so easy for this to be a simple exercise in machine hum, and the first track 'Deep Fridge' expertly explores this, but following from this we have the fast Autechre/Gescom electro grind of 'Dope Fridge'. You're sort of aware of where the sounds come from, but in a few seconds it hardly even matters. It's the kind of electronic music that makes us slightly tearful for the good 'ole days, and hearing it now, available for the first time in over ten years is a real pleasure. Elsewhere we have the twists humour of 'Funky Fridge' with its deep, stuttering vocal and the throbbing John Carpenter-esque 'Theme Fridge' rounding off a quite marvellous collection of electronic oddness.'
