Getting Out Lyrics

Yesterday I made you cry
It didn't even phase me when your tears rolled down
I was so convinced that I was right
That you never even tried to bring me 'round
And these rules are gettin' tangled in my body
These rules, it's gonna hurt when you pull them out
Look at what you made do
I was only tryin' to save the world that I forgot about askin' you
But look at what you made me say
I'm usin' crosswords on the radio tellin' you to change your ways
Look at what I've become
Thought I was everythin' you dreamed of
But you were dreamin' of gettin' out
And now I can't get my ass off the couch
Nicotine and alcohol
Anythin' to fill the hole 'cause it's all too much
There's nothin' I can talk about
Of course I'm gonna shut you out

I can hardly blame you 'cause you got me stuck, yeah
But these rules are gettin' tangled in my body
These rules, it's gonna hurt when you pull them out
Look at what you made do
I was just about to save the world that I forgot about askin' you
But look at what you made me say
I'm usin' crosswords on the radio tellin' you to change your ways
And look at what I've become
Thought I was everythin' you dreamed of
But you were dreamin' of gettin' out
And now I can't get my ass off the couch because of you
I made you fly away, made you leave today but you never know
How these rules got tangled in our bodies
These rules, it's gonna hurt when you pull them out
But look at what you made do
I was just about to save the world that I forgot about askin' you
But look at what you made me say
I'm usin' crosswords on the radio tellin' you to change your ways
And look at what I've become
Thought I was everythin' you dreamed of
But you were dreamin' of gettin' out
And now I can't get my ass off the couch because of you

Jason Robert Brown is an American musical theatre composer and lyricist from Ossining, New York. His career began with the unorthodox Songs for a New World, whose original off-Broadway production ran for 28 performances at the WPA Theater in New York City in 1995. The show sits on the boundary between musical and song cycle: it is a series of largely disjoint songs with (unlike a musical) no plot or characters that continue from song to song, but the songs and production themselves are highly theatrical and character-driven.
