Heart Worn Highway Lyrics

On this Heart Worn Highway
Into the heat of night
Look in your rearview mirror
Tucson is out of sightHeadin' for Oklahoma
Texas is still ahead
Face on a Wanted poster
Wanted alive or deadDestined to die an outlaw
Braggin' in every town
Two steps ahead of danger
Waiting to bring you downCling to your loaded pistol
Keep it right by your side
Haul ass on Heart Worn, run away
This could be your last rideI was on Heart Worn Highway
Too late to turn back now
You made the bed you lay in
And they'll find your trail somehowYou just gotta keep on runnin'
From all the things you've done
Out on that Heart Worn Highway

You'll never buy the gunDestined to die an outlaw
Braggin' in every town
Two steps ahead of danger
Waiting to bring you downCling to your loaded pistol
Keep it right by your side
Out on some Heart Worn Highway
This could be your last rideDestined to die an outlaw
Confined in every town
Two steps ahead of danger
Waiting to bring you downCling to your loaded pistol
Now, keep it right by your side
Out on some Heart Worn Highway
This could be your last ride

A life-long renegade, singer/songwriter David Allan Coe is one of the most colorful and unpredictable characters in country music history. One of the pioneering artists of the outlaw country movement of the '70s, he hasn't had many big hits — only three of his singles hit the Top Ten — but he has been among the biggest cult figures in country music throughout his career. Born in Akron, OH, Coe first got into trouble with the law at age nine. As a result, he was sent to reform school.
