Highways and Cigarettes Lyrics

Advisory - the following lyrics contain explicit language:
Got caught up in a breakaway dream
Destination city of New Orleans
Cheap motels and [Incomprehensible]
Cross some bridges for eternityHeaded west for a two week stay
And saw the [Incomprehensible]
Las Cruces is a part of you now
'Cause a bird sings songs of laughterStill out there with the coffee stain
And puttin' miles on shoes
Can't escape the smell of cigarettes
Still livin' out these American midnight bluesUnless to clear the mind

With a Mexicali radio station
Keep an eye out for the border patrol
Checkin' for drugs and so called aliensHighways and dreams forever together
In the minds of the free and the innocent
Always a future in a travelers hands
Starting fires on the river and madnessStill out there with the coffee stains
And puttin' miles on shoes
Can't escape the smell of cigarettes
Still livin' out these American midnight bluesStill out there with the coffee stains
And puttin' miles on shoes
Can't escape the smell of cigarettes
Still livin' out these American midnight blues

Son Volt is an alternative country group which formed in 1994 in St. Louis, Missouri. The band currently consists of Jay Farrar (vocals, guitar), Chris Masterson (guitar), Andrew Duplantis (bass, vocals), Mark Spencer (keyboards) and Dave Bryson (drums). Farrar is the only original member remaining in the band. Son Volt formed after the breakup of the band Uncle Tupelo, owing to the simmering creative differences between songwriters Farrar and Jeff Tweedy. The group's members lived in Minneapolis, St Louis, and New Orleans at the time.
