Singer Nico Goethals en composer Wim Arys started working together early 2002 and created their own unique rock sound containing elements of other genres.
The result of their collaboration was a ‘wall of sound’ where keyboards, bass, drums and guitar merged together to make musical waves, worthy of the name (Phil) Spector. Because so many songs got binned during the recording process, they decided to replace his first name Phil by the word Kill, referring to the expression ‘Kill your darlings’, and call the band Kill Spector.
Their recording career started when MTV networks Belgium general manager Michel Dupont and MTV head of programming Luc Van Laer heard their demo by chance and both loved it, so they passed it on to a brand new label of beer brewer Stella Artois called Stella Artois Music (SAMR). Meanwhile, the band had sent their demo to SAMR A&R scout Maurice Engelen (Praga Khan and Lords Of Acid) and he also selected them out of the hundreds of demo’s they received. They finally signed with the label in 2004.
Their debut album called ‘Fused’ (SAMR 2005) was released on June 13th 2005 in the Benelux countries (distributed by PIAS). The 2 disk CD (CD2 with acoustic versions and remixes), offers a mix of new millennium rock and electronics. The album was received well in the press (."...this album prooves that Kill Spector is a very talented band”; RifRaf magazine; “The future of Belgian music” Het Nieuwsblad; “Nobody can deny that Kill Spector has delivered an excellent rock album” Poppunt magazine.)
After this highly anticipated release, the band was asked to perform at some big name festivals like ‘Marktrock Leuven’, ‘De Gentse Feesten’ and ‘Genk On Stage’, with positive acclaim from both press and public alike (check out the Marktrock Leuven review on their website “These guys are going to make it!”).
Their first single and video for the song ‘Leave Me All Alone’ made playlist on MTV and in september 2005 they got the opportunity to play live alongside big names like ‘Kane’, ‘’t Hof Van Commerce’ and ‘Ozark Henry’ on the live MTV show ‘TMF café’.
Unfortunately, at that point their label Stella Artois Music Records was shut down by the sponsor, leaving the band stranded without a sufficient promotional budget for the rest album.
This setback did not deter the band. In a move that can only be described as artistic insanity, the band locked themselves in a recording studio late ’05 for 6 weeks, submerging themselves in the work of notorious 1930’s director Josef Von Sternberg, probably best now for his work with Marlene Ditriech on classics like ‘Der Blaue Engel’. The synths and samples of the first album made room for even more saturated tubes and raw energy and the result was a new sound and a lot of new tracks.
As a first single of the new album ‘Six Weeks At The Outside’ (Syndrome Recordings 2006) , they released a new single early 2006 called ‘Full of Desire’ with a humorous and sexy video featuring a lesbian sex maniac. The video soon became internet hype and was featured on dozens of forums and websites, resulting in more than 20.000 downloads. Despite being banned on some music channels, they got to the number one position in the illustrious Jim TV Pure Belgian Charts.
The second album ‘Six Weeks At The Outside’ was just released in Belgium and has already gotten some great reviews (“Kill Spector makes pop rock that sticks to your teeth like pink chewing gum” Rif Raf Magazine; “A wall of sound without forgetting the melody is their recipe for success” Digg Magazine).
