I Was, You Weren't Lyrics

I've never yet come when you've been here and said that you haven't been
I've never arrived and been blind to the things that I have seen
I've never gone out coming in through the door
I have known that the people I've passed haven't been there beforeYou said that I'm dead but of shots I have heard no report
And seen my release in a newsflash when I wasn't caught
You tell me that darkness is daylight that's been painted black
And I couldn't look forwards if my face was turned round to the backI knew that the lies that you told me weren't really the same
As telling the truth and not knowing that lies were to blame
So I asked of the I Ching if you would remember my face
And it said you'd see through me, and I think maybe this is the caseI heard someone thinking a lot of the noise that a silence makes
And I knew then that going depends on the way that you faced
If I hadn't come later, I should have arrived before now
If I knew all the answers, I shouldn't be where I am now
You told me you'd be there if I ever really needed you
I was and you weren't, you weren't and I was, where were you ?
Did you hear me looking in, and I really can't understand why
You were looking straight through me and I didn't reflect in your eye

Duncan Browne (25 March 1947 — 28 May 1993) was a singer-songwriter from England whose début album "Give Me, Take You", a melancholy baroque folk album often compared to Nick Drake's albums, was released on Andrew Loog Oldham's Immediate label in 1968. Together with two other multi-instrumentalists, Peter Godwin and Sean Lyons, Browne formed the band Metro whose debut ('Metro') was released in the late '70s on the Transatlantic label.
