During the mid- to late '80s, James Hubbard (Hub) Moore was the bassist for the Boston groove band Three Colors. When the five members of Three Colors went their separate ways in 1988, Moore made a gradual move to N.Y.C. and performed solo, simply as Hub Moore. Over the next decade, he led the Great Outdoors and contributed musical scores to Hal Hartley films. In 1998, he released HUB, his well-received debut, on Slash/London. The bluesy pop single "Evil Twin" became an alterna-radio favorite in Boston and N.Y.C.

Boston has always had a strong brotherhood among musicians. In Moore's case, a tangle of friendships and professional associations reveals the following: Chris Harford, the Three Colors frontman, produced HUB; Dana Colley, the Three Colors saxophonist, moved on to Morphine in 1989; Three Colors' own Soul Select label released Mark Sandman's (died 1998) project prior to Morphine, Treat Her Right. As for the moody rock on the HUB album, talents such as Dean Ween (Ween), Andrew Weiss (the Rollins Band, the Butthole Surfers), and Claude Coleman Jr. (Amandla, Ween) offered up their support.
