Harry Smith included two tracks by Ernest Stoneman (May 25, 1893 – June 14, 1968) on his Anthology of American Folk Music. Ernest Stoneman and Hattie Stoneman's “The Mountaineer’s Courtship” (recorded on May 12, 1927) and “The Spanish Merchant’s Daughter” (recorded on October 31, 1928, with Bolen Frost on banjo and Uncle Eck Dunford on fiddle).
Ernest Van "Pop" Stoneman was a singer and songwriter, and proficient musician on the guitar, autoharp, harmonica, clawhammer banjo, and jaw harp.
