One Of These Things First Lyrics

I could have been a sailor, I could have been a cook
A real live lover, could have been a book
I could have been a signpost, could have been a clock
As simple as a kettle, steady as a rockI could be here and now
I would be, I should be but how?I could have been
One of these things first
I could have been
One of these things firstI could have been your pillar, I could have been your door
I could have stayed beside you, could have stayed for more
Could have been your statue, could have been your friend
A whole long lifetime could have been the endI could be yours so true
I would be, I should be through and throughI could have been
One of these things first
I could have been
One of these things firstI could have been a whistle, could have been a flute
A real live giver, could have been a boot
I could have been a signpost, could have been a clock
As simple as a kettle, steady as a rockI could be even here

I would be, I should be so nearI could have been
One of these things first
I could have been
One of these things first

Nick Drake (Nicholas Rodney Drake, Rangoon, Burma, June 19, 1948 - Tanworth-in-Arden, England, November 25, 1974) was an English folk singer known for his gentle, enigmatic songs and his virtuoso right-hand finger picking technique. Although he recorded only three albums, critics and fellow musicians hold his work in very high esteem. Drake failed to find a wide audience during his lifetime, and had a strong aversion to performing. Since his death, however, Drake's music has gained a significant cult following.
