The 5 Browns are a classical piano musical group consisting of five siblings, each a virtuoso concert pianist. Their repertoire includes mostly popular classical tunes, such as George Gershwin's Rhapsody In Blue, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's Flight of the Bumblebee and Grieg's In the Hall of the Mountain King.
In descending order of their age, The 5 Browns are Desirae Brown (born 1979), Deondra Brown (born 1980), Gregory Brown (born 1983), Melody Brown (born 1984), and Ryan Brown (born 1986). All five siblings were born in Houston, Texas, where each began piano study with Yelena Kurinets at age 3. In 1991, the family moved to Utah, and the children continued private study there with Irene Peery-Fox. They were the first group of five siblings to attend the musical conservatory Juilliard, which they attended simultaneously for five consecutive years, studying with Yoheved Kaplinsky. From 2004 to 2008 they were signed with the RCA Red Seal label (later folded into Sony BMG Masterworks). In 2008, a "best of" CD was released, 5 Stars - Favorites From The 5 Browns. However, as of their 2010 CD release, they are signed with E1 Music. The 5 Browns are Steinway Artists. The Brown family are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 2009, the group published an autobiography, Life Between the Keys: The (Mis)adventures of the 5 Browns. In 2010, they were featured on a PBS TV special, “The 5 Browns In Concert."
The 5 Browns swept the classical world in 2005 with the release of their self-titled first recording (i.e. The 5 Browns) for RCA Red Seal , which landed them at the top of the weekly Billboard charts and, at the end of the year, as one of the Top Classical Artists of 2005. Their successful debut album was followed by "No Boundaries," which was released April 4, 2006. "Brown In Blues" (released October 2, 2007) was their third album. Their most recent album is "The 5 Browns in Hollywood" (released April 6, 2010). The CDs mark their musical phases: the first album served as an introduction to the youthful, all-American quintet; the sophomore album sought to capture and emanate the energy of classical music; their third album explores the bluesy side of classical music with a touch of jazz; and their fourth album is a snapshot of some of the Browns' favorite musical themes in Hollywood, both old and new.
