River Lyrics

River, you heard my first cry as a baby
And, like my mom, you sang me lullabies
You knew my fishing pole
When I was eight years oldAnd river
You never told me liesRiver, I can see you from my window
Your muddy water makes me feel alone
River, you keep flowing
Like you know just where you're goingBut river
Will you ever take me homeRiver, I'm not proud of what I've done
Somehow my fishing pole became a gun
Through these prison bars I see
That you're still running freeBut river
I've got no place to run

A life-long renegade, singer/songwriter David Allan Coe is one of the most colorful and unpredictable characters in country music history. One of the pioneering artists of the outlaw country movement of the '70s, he hasn't had many big hits — only three of his singles hit the Top Ten — but he has been among the biggest cult figures in country music throughout his career. Born in Akron, OH, Coe first got into trouble with the law at age nine. As a result, he was sent to reform school.
