Scatterlings of Africa Lyrics

Copper sun sinking low
Scatterlings and fugitives
Hooded eyes and weary brows
Seek refuge in the nightThey are the scatterlings of Africa
Each uprooted one
On the road to Phelamanga
Where the world beganI love the scatterlings of Africa
Each and every one
In their hearts a burning hunger
Beneath the copper sunAncient bones from Olduvai
Echoes of the very first cry
"Who made me here and why
Beneath the copper sun?"African idea, African idea
Make the future clear
Make the future clearAnd we are the scatterlings of Africa
Both you and I
We are on the road to Phelamanga
Beneath a copper skyAnd we are the scatterlings of Africa

On a journey to the stars
Far below, we leave forever
Dreams of what we were

Johnny Clegg's second crossover band Savuka takes its name from the Zulu word for "We have risen". Savuka, like Clegg's first band Juluka before it, mixes African music with Celtic folk music and international rock sounds. They recorded four albums: Third World Child (1987), Shadow Man (1988), Cruel, Crazy, Beautiful World (1989), Heat, Dust & Dreams (1993). The last album was nominated for a US Grammy Award for the best world music album in 1993.

In the United States songs performed by Johnny Clegg have appeared in three well-known feature films: "Scatterlings of Africa" in Rain Main, "Dela" in George of the Jungle, and "Life Is a Magic Thing" in the animated film Ferngully.
