Captain Kickarse and the Awesomes are an instrumental progressive psychedelic rock band based in Sydney, Australia. Founding members Phil McCourt (guitar) and Alex O'Toole (drums) met in high school and produced music with several collaborators under different names, including Felonius Funk, Suspicious Fishes, Oyster Moisture and Dr. Gonzo. In 2005 they were joined by Hugh Munro (bass) and a singer, and recorded an EP under the name Captain Kickarse and the Awesomes. After the departure, replacement and departure of two singers, the band began working as an instrumental three-piece, and have subsequently recorded a self-titled album in 2007 and Falsimilies from the Facts Machine in 2009.
Captain Kickarse and the Awesomes have begun working closely with the Bird's Robe Collective (a Sydney-based volunteer management team and recently-launched record label) and gig regularly in Sydney, and more occassionally Brisbane and Melbourne.

"On the surface they’re a simple guitar/bass/drums power trio, but the source of their Kickarse power comes from their extremely delicate sense of how to make a groove grab you, and then how to craft a rhythmic riff at the end of it that picks you up and shakes you before entering the next groove. Their long instrumental pieces – punctuated by the occasional scream – were sometimes prog instrument mastery, sometimes psychedelic groove jam...the three beardy chaps who are Captain Kickarse & the Awesomes lived up to their name."
- The Plummet Onion on The Captain live at the Excelsior Hotel April 2010
