It’s hard to talk about the future tho, without thinking about terrible things happening in the future. It’s all we think about, the doom and gloom of everything. But, if you think about it according to game theory, it all starts to make you feel a little bit better. In game theory there is this thing called the sand pile game. A sandpile game is a metaphor for all of time because if you drop a grain of sand on a table over and over and over again these grains of are random events, the random event of the universe and they happen randomly and they’ll land randomly but one they land and are locked into place by the next event, the new present, they become the past the moment the next one lands. Right, then it builds into this kind of like Close Encounters mashed potato sculpture and in it there will be inevitably these fingers of instability that start to grow thru the grains of sand so that the next random grain of sand, totally random, will fall and if it lands on one of these finger of instability there’ll be a landslide a catastrophe.
And catastrophes it has been discovered through this game theory stuff observe what’s called a power law in math. And that means that if you double the size of the catastrophe it happens four times less often. So when you wonder about the future and you think will catastrophes happen, yes, twice - there will be something devastating that changes your life forever; and there will be eight hideous situations you have no idea how you’re going to get out of; and there’ll be 32 really ugly scenes; and there will be a hundred and twenty-eight conundrums that generally bum you out; and there will be 512, uhh, it was a nightmare, kind of situations; and there will be 2048 hangnails. That’s for everybody that’s inevitable, but there will also be what’s in between those things, the negative space between all those calamities, and it is our job to try and enjoy that rather than prepare for the next one.
