Why Lyrics

hey boy take a look at me
straight through the eyes
where you can see my reality
it's not hard for you to realize
that you were the one I wanted
but you killed me inside
now I can't pretend
why did this have to end
(Chorus)
You love her, you hate her
I can't take this anymore you
You lose her, you use her
I am lost and know not what to do
Why'd this have to end?
the bitter sweetness is all that stands
the more I try you fall through my hands
so many things to watch out for baby
you know I can't take anymore

I cry time and time again
you try but there's nothing to defend
(Chorus)
and I know I can live without you
although things have changed
I'm not sure if I regret
all those things that we said
but I know I can live
hey boy take a look at me
straight through the eyes
where you can see my reality
it's not hard for you to realize
that you were the one I wanted
but you killed me inside
now I can't pretend
why did this have to end
why did this have to end
why did this have to end

Escalator over the hill is mostly known as a jazz opera, but was released as a chronotransduction with words by Paul Haines, and music/composition/adaptation by Carla Bley. This particular collaboration lasted three years, for it was the time that it took to record, and produce this work. It's infamous "locked groove" ending of the LP was transcribed to the CD version, the hum at the end lasting for almost 20 minutes.
Recorded in 1968-1971, released 1971.
