Winchester Cathedral Lyrics

Winchester Cathedral,
You're bringin' me down.
You stood and you watched as
my baby left town.
You coulda' done something,
but you didn't try.
You didn't do nothing,
you let her walk by.
Now everyone knows, just how much,
I needed that gal.
She wouldn't have gone far away,
if only you'd started ringin' your bells.
Winchester Cathedral,
You're bringin' me down.
You stood and you watched as
my baby left town.

A-Vo-De-Oh Doe,
A-Vo-De-Oh Doe.
A Vo-De-Oh Doe
Dah-dah Domp.

The New Vaudeville Band was a group created by songwriter Geoff Stephens in 1966 to record his novelty composition "Winchester Cathedral", a song inspired by the dance bands of the 1920s. To his surprise, the song became a huge international hit, rising to #1 in the United States. When Stephens received several requests for The New Vaudeville Band to tour he had to put together a group, since the song was recorded by studio musicians hired only for the recording session. He contacted a real group, the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, which played similar music at the time.
