Hard to Make It Lyrics

Lonesome stranger, won't you share my bed
The sidewalk siren at the bus stop said
Love is a tear in a salty bay and it's
Hard to make it in this world todayLove is a river but the river run dry
The clouds blow bitter in a boneyard sky
Flesh dries up and it burns away
And you can't remember where your heart once lay and it's
Hard to make it in this world todayDandy don, he's a velvet hand
He's my silent partner, he's the inside man
Holds me shakin' through the shotgun dawn and he
Keeps me walkin' down this road i'm onKeeps me runnin' when he calls my name
Shines the light but he kills the flame
Stones me simple when i try to speak
Bruise my face but he kiss my cheek and it's
Hard to make it when you get this weakOne of these mornins, gonna spread my wings
Like a red-ass robin at the gates of spring
Rise up singin' on a cyclone wind
Till the walls of this city come tumblin' inWalls of this city come tumblin', rumblin'

'round my head like an old man stumblin'
I don't care if the mountains fall
There's a little blue egg in the middle of this all and it's
Hard to make it when you feel so smallBus pulled up and i climbed inside
I sat in the window and i waved goodbye
She stood starin' at the blue machine
Singin' nobody knows the trouble i've seenNobody cares and nobody knows
Only weeds remember where your headstone grows and it's
Dust to ashes and wings to clay and i
Check my wallet as we pull away, 'cause it's
Hard to make it in this world today

Tracy Grammer (born April 8, 1968, in Homestead, Florida) is an American folk singer known for her work as half of the folk duo Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer and for the solo career that she has continued since Carter's death in 2002. She released three albums with Dave Carter from 1998 to 2001, at first doing instrumental work and providing backing vocals, and then, by their last album together, singing lead vocals on half of the tracks. Two albums by the duo have been released following Carter's death.

Following Carter's death in 2002, Grammer made the decision to play solo at several of the dates that they had scheduled, most notably an engagement at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival. Taking into account Carter's expressed wish that eventually she would sing all of the songs, she continued playing Carter's music.

Her first solo album, The Verdant Mile, was an EP containing her first original composition, the title track, a eulogy for Carter.

Her second solo release, Flower of Avalon, consisted of ten tracks, nine of which were written by Carter before his death, and one of which is a traditional folk song arranged by William Jolliff. The album was co-produced by Grammer and John Jennings. Featured artists include Mary Chapin Carpenter, who provided many backing vocals, and Jim Henry, Grammer's touring partner and Signature Sounds label mate.

Her third album, Book of Sparrows, was released in November, 2007 and is a seven-song EP featuring covers of songs by Tom Russell, Kate Power, David Francey, Dave Carter, and Paul Simon. The EP was co-produced by Grammer and Jim Henry. Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
