Mother, I Climbed Lyrics

On tomorrow's painted wagon, in a yester-dreamin' day
I rode to heaven never thinkin' I'd be back this way
Now I'm standin' at your doorstep with my halo turnin' grey
Open up your gate, MariannaCHORUS:
Lay me down in the dark womb of your love
Mother I sought the chosen people, but I found no one to comfort me
Lay me down in the dark womb of your love
Mother I climbed the highest steeple, I found nothin' to believeWhen they called my faults against the wall I took my place in line
And put my trust in priestly men to break the ties that bind
But their straight and narrow highway's just a row of billboard signs
Open up your gate, MariannaCHORUSSo I set my feet to walkin' from the sidewalk to the sand
In search of any saint or sage who knew the master plan
Yeah, I wandered every backroad in that broken promise land
Open up your gate, MariannaCHOURSAs lightnin' burns these bridges under, smoke will surely rise
And the fables of my innocence blow lazy through the skies
When timeless truths reveal themselves as little more than lies
Open up your gate, MariannaCHORUSSticks and stones might break this body and words might wound my soul
And phantom visions fly me where the faithful fear to go

But when this story's over and my sun is sinkin' low
Open up your gate, mariannaCHOURSMother I climbed the holy mountain, I found nothin' to believe

Tracy Grammer (born April 8, 1968, in Homestead, Florida) is an American folk singer known for her work as half of the folk duo Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer and for the solo career that she has continued since Carter's death in 2002. She released three albums with Dave Carter from 1998 to 2001, at first doing instrumental work and providing backing vocals, and then, by their last album together, singing lead vocals on half of the tracks. Two albums by the duo have been released following Carter's death.

Following Carter's death in 2002, Grammer made the decision to play solo at several of the dates that they had scheduled, most notably an engagement at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival. Taking into account Carter's expressed wish that eventually she would sing all of the songs, she continued playing Carter's music.

Her first solo album, The Verdant Mile, was an EP containing her first original composition, the title track, a eulogy for Carter.

Her second solo release, Flower of Avalon, consisted of ten tracks, nine of which were written by Carter before his death, and one of which is a traditional folk song arranged by William Jolliff. The album was co-produced by Grammer and John Jennings. Featured artists include Mary Chapin Carpenter, who provided many backing vocals, and Jim Henry, Grammer's touring partner and Signature Sounds label mate.

Her third album, Book of Sparrows, was released in November, 2007 and is a seven-song EP featuring covers of songs by Tom Russell, Kate Power, David Francey, Dave Carter, and Paul Simon. The EP was co-produced by Grammer and Jim Henry. Read more on Last.fm. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License; additional terms may apply.
