So Long, Arlington Lyrics

So long, Arlington
By the time you read this letter I'll be long gone
I left my key in the mailbox
My checkbook on the stairs
I don't know where my path will lead me but I know I'm going there
He lived with his mother on an old estate
She collected pillows, he collected 38's
He fell pretty hard for a girl from town
But he was too stuck-up, so she had to put him down
He thought he'd find another woman and try to forget her
But his cologne smelled a little like Dr. Pepper
Couldn't get a date to save his life
Ate with a silver spoon but couldn't even cut his meat with a knife
So long, Arlington
By the time you even notice I'll be way out of town

I took the Thermos for my coffee, some meatloaf from the fridge
And if they ask me if I know you I'll pretend I never did
He was kinda like a turkey without any stuffing
He wasn't really bad he was just good for nothing
Too much polish on his hair, too much shine on his shoes
He owned eleven guitars but couldn't sing the blues
So if you ever dream you are a bird in flight
Remember how he flew away in the night
Singing:
So long, Arlington
You can keep my motorcycles, you can keep my guns
I might send a postcard in a year or two
I'm tired of being myself, I'm gonna be somebody new
The day he turned up missing we were, well, surprised
His money and his mother, he'd left them both behind
Thermos full of coffee, suitcase in his hand
It was then we started thinking someday he might be a man
